Book: Rocket Raccoon #1
Writer/Artist: Skottie Young
Colors: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
Lettering: Jeff Eckleberry
From Marvel.com: “ALL-NEW, IN-CONTINUITY SERIES! As defenders of the cosmos go, Rocket Raccoon has faced his fair share of galactic battles. He’s been a hero to the weak, a champion of good, a protector of the innocent, a heartthrob to the many intergalactic female species and now–a raccoon on the run?! ( I’m sorry, I’m sorry, a “formidable-and-expert-Guardian” on the run. Rocket is NOT a raccoon, okay?) Rocket’s high-flying life of adventure and heroism may soon be a thing of the past when he becomes a wanted man—and the authorities are not the only one on his TAIL! (We’ll definitely be overusing that pun!)”
The Good:
I’ve been excited about this series since it was announced. There was never any skepticism or hesitancy. Just pure, child-like excitement. (My wife would probably tell you that all too often I am guilty of behaving like a child and therefore my opinion should be approached with caution and Riddlin.) I mean, COME ON! IT’S ROCKET F–KING RACCOON! How can you not love him?! Also, Skottie Young is writing the series and there is literally not a better writer on this entire planet to write Rocket in his own book. He perfectly captures Rocket’s matter-of-fact murderous attitude and balances it with the right blend of humor to keep it from being too dark. His brilliantly cartoon-ish artwork, partnered with Beaulieu’s color sense, helps in creating that balance by making the scenes so bright and whimsical.
The Bad:
You know the drill by now… there was NOTHING wrong with this book. The only think I didn’t like was that it ended. It’s one of the most perfect #1’s I’ve read in a long time.
The Final Say:
You NEED to pick up this book. You’ll love it. The kids in your life will love it. It’s fun for the whole family! Seriously though, the book is very well written and never lets you down. I give it a 4 out of 4. I couldn’t even wait to read it. I pulled into Sonic and bought my kid and his friend each a slush so that I could hurry up and read it. It was totally worth the extra $3 for the slush’s too. GO GET THIS BOOK NOW!
