Overview
This series has been a year long, and it has definitely felt like a year. The book has been very enjoyable and it’s the best origin story since Frank Miller wrote Batman: Year One, which every comic book fan should read. This book was a good reminder of why I love the character of Batman. He is not afraid to face fear, he is not afraid of failure, and Batman will risk his own life in order to save the entire city of Gotham that he calls home.

The Good
As I said in my review of Batman #31, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo can do no wrong. If you can only afford to read one comic book, this should be that comic. Scott Snyder knows how to write an intense comic, and he has the art of keeping you in suspense nailed down perfectly. Greg Capullo and Danny Miki and FCO know how to really work together and keep a dark story colorful and sharp. The art in the book is easily some of the very best that DC is offering right now. My absolute favorite part of this comic was the recording that Batman makes to Alfred before searching for Riddler. Batman isn’t sure if he will survive the encounter with Riddler and tells Alfred that he (Batman) hopes he was wrong about everything and that Alfred was right all along. It was a very emotional page, and reminded me of what a great father figure Alfred is for Bruce. The most memorable moment in this issue though, was the line, “Maybe that’s what Batman is about. Not winning. But failing, and getting back up knowing he’ll fail, fail a thousand times, but still won’t give up.”

Zero Year has just been too long. I am really excited for Batman #33 just so this arc can come to an end. But, as much as I have complained about the length, the series HAS been worth it. This has been a great story arc. I would personally rather have one long, great arc rather then several short, bad stories. Overall, besides the length there isn’t much to be found wrong with this book. We see the “Great Detective” struggle, and also succeed.

This would be a terrible jumping on point if you haven’t been keeping up with Batman. But if you are reading Batman, DO NOT drop this book. The end is in sight and it will come next month. So, if you aren’t reading this you have time to jump on the series before the climatic ending. And, being a Scott Snyder fan, I know the ending will be amazing. I give this book a solid 4 out of 4. It was a great Batman book and it had everything that I could personally want in a Bats story. Be sure to pick this up, Zero Year will definitely go down in Batman History.
