The idea that Spider-Man can be anyone isn’t a new idea for comic book readers. He’s such a relatable character that many readers can easily identify with him and his daily struggles and poor luck. It was announced today that actor/rapper/comedian Donald Glover will be voicing Miles Morales, The half black-half Hispanic 13 year old Spider-Man, in the Disney XD animated series Ultimate Spider-Man.
This is a dream come true for Glover, who has voiced his desire to play Spider-Man many times via twitter, and there is even a Glover for Spider-Man tumblr (take that for what it’s worth). In 2011 the character was introduced by writer Brian Michael Bendis, and since then Glover has been wanting to help bring the character to life. Glover has stated many times that he is a life long Spider-Man fan, and can be seen in an episode of Community, on NBC, in spidey pajamas.
Miles is a high school student who tries to balance a family life with moonlighting as Spider-Man, Glover says, “and it’s a lot of pressure for a kid to be yourself and have all this responsibility. Miles is really brave, and that’s a cool attribute to have when you’re that young.
“I admire anybody who allows themselves to be themselves. Especially a kid.”
Glover, who has a high voice, didn’t have to pitch it up too much to play a teenager with a heap of youthful optimism. Actually, there wasn’t a whole lot of pretending to be someone else needed.
“That’s the great part about the Spider-Man costume: He can be anybody,” Glover says. “Spider-Man could be a girl. Spider-Man could be an old man. You don’t know. So I just tried to be as me as possible, because you’re always just going to bring it back to yourself when you watch the show.” From USA Today
As a big fan of the rapper and comedian, I really can’t see anyone as more fit for the character and persona of Miles. You will be able to watch the show on Disney XD which airs this Sunday but the Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors “Spider Verse” story arc will not take place until next year. I don’t know if I can wait that long, because I “Got no patience, cause I’m not a doctor.” Stay tuned for all your updates regarding Donald Glover as Miles Morales and leave your feedback of what you think about this casting.
