There are two things I am really passionate about. One of those things are comic books and the other one is history. So when I find out comic books and history are going to be tied together in some way, I become really excited and start to nerd out. With that being said, I had a field day today when I saw the new trailer for X-Men Days of Future Past. It’s about one of my all time favorite villains (Of all time!), Magneto killing President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
One might first thing “WOW. That seems really insensitive to do with it being the 50th anniversary of his death…” But I argue that its not insensitive at all. If you turned onto History channel any time this past weekend all you saw was footage and pictures of Kennedy’s death and very graphic images of the assassination. Nowhere in the viral add does it show the president being killed, but it does tie together historical facts to make it seem like if mutants existed, Erik may have been guilty.
I think one of the coolest thing about this is how it plays on the conspiracy theories that people come to think up for any incident that ever happens in politics. The way the website is set up, is really cool. As a bit of a history fiend, I was super excited while scrolling through the information about Erik Lehnsherr and his affiliation with the death of Kennedy. I honestly can’t stress how well I feel like they put this together. It didn’t seem to be exploiting a dead president nor did it seem to be insulting to the remaining people alive who knew and considered Kennedy a friend. I look forward to seeing how they continue to use this viral marketing technique.
