I’m calling this a “pre-review” because technically no “official” reviews are permitted yet. But, last night I was lucky enough to see a pre-screening of Kingsman: The Secret Service, starring Colin Firth, Sam Jackson, & Michael Caine, and based off of the comic series by Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons, and I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT IT SO BAD!
…But I’m not gonna. Well, not entirely. I’m not give anything away regarding the story or plot, but I want you guys to know that this flick is 100%, absolutely worth seeing.
Fans of the comic will find that the film is very different but not in a bad way. It takes the concept from the Secret Service comic series and expands on it without cheapening it.
If you’re not familiar with the comic, don’t worry. It doesn’t matter. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn, who made the first Kick-Ass film (another Millar comic), as well as X-Men: First Class, and it is complete. There are no holes or inconsistencies. The cast is fantastic (Sam Jackson proves again that he’s just so damn good), and the film moves at a perfect pace. It slows down just enough to really blow you away when it kicks back into high gear.
It’s also really, really funny. I would put this up there with the Jump Street flicks as far as comedy/action flicks go. Not that this a constant laugh-riot devoid of any seriousness, but they inject the right kind of humor and drop it in spots where it lightens the intensity. Probably the best part about the film is how it brilliantly, and blatantly, pays homage to the classic spy films, specifically the old Bond movies.
I promise you, you WANT to see this movie. You want to see it more than the 50 Shades of Grey movie, which it opens against on February 13th, vote with your dollars. Don’t let the terrorists win.
