Book: Wytches #1
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Jock
Summary from Comixology: Across the globe, century after century, men and women were burned, drowned, hanged, tortured, imprisoned, persecuted, and murdered for witchcraft. None of them were witches. They died protecting a terrible and hidden truth: witches, real witches, are out there. They are ancient, elusive, and deadly creatures that are rarely seen and even more rarely survived. This October, superstar creators SCOTT SNYDER (SEVERED, Batman) and JOCK (SNAPSHOT, Batman) unveil WYTCHES, and introduce you to a world of unimaginable horror.
Overview:
If you have frequented our site any, and have read my articles, you should know a few things about me that will play into this comic review 1) I’m a huge Scott Snyder fan, and 2) I hate horror anything. (Unless it’s the classics like Halloween and similar films of that nature). But, when I heard that Snyder and Jock would be working on a book together again, I was ecstatic. Batman: The Black Mirror is one of the most twisted and dark Bat stories I’ve ever read. The art and storytelling was like nothing I had ever seen. Well that’s not true anymore, after only 1 issue of Wytches, it blew my mind, made me jump a few times, and left me wanting more. If you can write a horror story and leave ME wanting more, you have done something right.
The Good:
I want to start off by saying how much I love Image Comics right now. Their books are so affordable, full of content, and have no ads after 2-4 pages. For $2.99 you get 36 pages of an amazing story. 30 of the 36 pages are the story, followed by a 3 page “Who Would You Pledge” story which was the creation of the book. Image is really on point, and they are truly becoming MAJOR competition for the “big two.” Snyder’s storytelling ability reminds me why I love comic books. From page one I was sucked into the story and wanted to know more and more about the characters. I really enjoyed that one of the main characters is a comic book writer/artist, I found that entertaining. There were some really intense parts in the book that left me a little worried about turning the next page. As someone who is easily scared, I will not be entering the woods anytime soon. Jock’s art is flawless in this book. With Snyder’s way of telling the story, Jock’s art leaves a very eerie feel to the book and really brings the horror to life. This is not a book for the faint of heart or easily scared, that includes me.
The Bad:
I’ll be completely honest, there was not a thing wrong with this book, except for that fact that I have to wait a month for the next issue. That will be unbearable.
The Final Say:
This is the month for anything horror related. I can’t think of a better way to start October than with the first issue of Wytches. We have given a lot of books a 4 out of 4 before, but never a 5 out of 4, this is the first ever 5 out of 4. It was truly flawless and will become one of the classics in horror comics books. Make sure you get your hands on it! It’s already sold out in most shops and heading into a second printing more then likely, so if you see it in your shop, BUY IT!
